Upcoming Events
Here are events coming up that CfA is organizing or will be attending.
Joining others to help animals can be invigorating and empowering. Each person who holds a sign, hands out literature, answers questions at a table, or participates in any way in an event makes a difference.
Saturday April 13 – Saturday May 18
This
FREE program, which has been very successful in many regions of the US and the UK, pairs people who want to go vegan (pledges) with people who are vegan (mentors).
Each mentor is matched with up to two pledges. Pledges attend five meetings, spaced a week apart. Mentors attend some of the meetings (space limitations), as well as a pre-program meeting, and they must be available to their pledges by phone, email, or text during the four-week period. Some members of Compassion for Animals will be mentors and giving talks and cooking demos at the meetings.
Mentors: If you are vegan and are interested in being a MENTOR for the upcoming program, please sign up at
www.panveganpledge.org/forms/mentorform_dcmetroarea.html. You do not need to attend every session, but you need to attend a pre-program nmeeting on April 13, the first meeting on April 20, the trip to
Poplar Spring Animal Sanctuary on May 11, and the last meeting on May 18. You must also be reachable by phone, email, or text from April 20 through May 18 month so your pledges can ask you questions about veganism.
Pledges: This program still has room for PLEDGES, so if you or someone you know have been considering going vegan but want to get support, this will be a great opportunity. It will start on April 13 with the pre-program meeting and then run five consecutive Saturdays, from April 20 through ending May 18. Pledges are required to attend all six meetings, including the pre-program event.
All of the meetings except the ones on April 13 and May 11 are from 2 PM to 4:30 PM at the VIENNA WHOLE FOODS, 143 Maple Ave. E, Vienna, VA 22180. The April 13 pre-pledge meeting is at the Vienna Community Center, and the May 11 meeting is at Poplar Spring Animal Sanctuary outside of Poolesville, MD from 1pm to 3pm. Carpooling will be available for Poplar Spring.
If you are interested in being a vegan pledge, you can sign up
right here.

Wednesday June 5
Melanie Joy at West End Library, DC
Melanie Joy, Ph.D, author of
Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs, and Wear Cows, and founder and president of the
Carnism Awareness and Action Network (CAAN), will speak about the powerful cultural influences that allow us to overcome our natural compassion and kill and eat some animals (while treating others like family).
Dr. Joy is a popular speaker all over the world. Her message is relevant for both vegans and non-vegans. Both groups will benefit from learning that appetites for meat are not so much natural as they are arbitrary, heavily-promoted societal norms.
There will be plenty of time for Q and Q, and free light refreshments before the talk and slide show.
Please RSVP at the
“official” invitation / RSVP page (or at the CAAN
Facebook event--see below). When you RSVP, it looks like you're buying a ticket. But the event is
free and there aren't actually tickets; that's how EventBrite (which we're using to track attendance) works. Thanks!
This is an official DC Public Library library event. Compassion for Animals has played a role in organizing and promoting it. Hope you can make it! Invite your friends, family and co-workers!
When:
6:15pm: Doors open; free light refreshments
6:45pm: Slide show / talk
7:45pm: Q&A and book-signing
Poplar Spring Animal Sanctuary is a 400-acre oasis about an hour from suburban northern Virginia. 200 rescued farm animal live there: cows, goats, sheep, pigs, turkeys, chickens, rabbits, and more. Come meet the animals and learn about their heartbreaking and heartwarning stories. The tour lasts about an hour and will be given by Terry Cummings, co-founder and co-director of the sanctuary. There will be plenty of opportunity for questions.
Please RSVP at
info@compassion4animals.org.
When:
1pm
Where:
Poplar Spring Animal Sanctuary
15200 Mt. Nebo Road
Poolesville, Maryland 20837
[map and directions]
When you arrive, open the gate to drive in, then close the gate behind you. Drive about a mile along the gravel road until you get near the end and can see some of the buildings on the property. We'll gather there. You can park your vehicle on the grass by the side of the road.
We can probably arrange some carpooling. Let us know if that's something in which you'd be interested.
Notes:
— The tour is wheelchair-accessible.
— Even if you've volunteered at Poplar Spring, you may want to take the tour, to learn about the facility and how the animals arrived there.
— The tour is free, but Poplar Spring does encourage donations. (You can donate at the sanctuary or online.)
